Shinji is the 14 year old son of Gendou and Yui Ikari, who are the top scientists behind the Evangelion project. Because of this, his parents are rarely home, so he lives mostly by himself. Shinji attends school in Tokyo 3, and, in many aspects is your basic teen. But, one day on the way to school, he bumps into a girl, Rei Ayanami, accidently gets to see her underwear, and then finds out she's the new transfer student! Not only does she prompty acuse him of being a pervert, but in front of the whole class none the less! Shinji's childhood friend, Asuka Langley Soryu stands up for him, but only makes the situation worse as his guy friends Toji Suzahara and Kensuke Aida tease him while Kaowru Nagisa looks on. After everything is explained, the group eventually accepts Rei, and they go hang out together a few times. Shortly after, a mysterious figure appears in the sky, and the group finds out that they are all going to be the pilots of the Evangelion units, giant robots that were created to destroy the Angels, beings seeking to destroy humanity. The being in the sky that Shinji had witnessed was one of these Angels. The first attack operation did not go smoothly. Rei, having more training than anyone, was sent to fight the Angel, and Shinji as well. Shinji was initially very afraid to fight, afraid to die, and because of his hesitation, Rei was injured protecting him. This caused him to come to his senses and kill the Angel. In the second and final attack, multiple Angels appear and all the children are sent out to kill them. They accomplish this, and though, even though they think it is over, they are informed that they will each be sent to a different branch of NERV for training purposes. Kaowru dissapears, and the group forgets him, revealing he may have had more to do with the Angels than anyone thought.

Personality wise, Shinji is quite a bit more sociable than the anime. This is proved true when it's found that he and Asuka have been friends for years, and he had been friends with Kaowru for more than ten! Shinji and Kaowru are very close, and often play music together, Shinji on cello, Kaowru on violin. They are both very accomplished musicians, and Kaowru invites Shinji to play in a concert with him. However, Shinji is still quite shy, and can't bring himself to perform in front of a large group of people. Like in any Evangelion story, Shinji can be kinda emo at times, whether it's because he just can't get the nerve to tell Asuka how he feels, or dissapoints Kaowru, it affects him greatly, even if it's no big deal to the other party. He can also be juuuuust a little bit perverted, I mean, he is 14 for crying out loud. Though, when Toji and Kensuke start talking about perverted things, he's the first one to go red. Shinji's shyness leads to him to be highly influenced by his friends, he's definitly not a leader. He can be quite friendly though, if you get to know him.
